Gashosai, Roppongi, Dinner @ Yanase's, BBALL in Shibuya, Rakugo & Dinner with Mikie, Junko and Natsuyo

Friday

Today was our gasshosai (chorus festival) @ Narashino Bunka Hll. Takahashi sensei picked me up @ around 0730ish and we headed to Tsudanuma. Got to Narashino Bunka Hall and met up with some other teachers and the student committee. The whole performance was subarashii (wonderful). The kids all shocked me in ways that I've never seen. From piano playing to singing to even conducting! You can see how much time, effort and heart into this festival. They even had a Japanese opera singer perform.

Went drinkin' with the teachers after the festival near Tsudanuma eki. It was actually quite close to my friend Ko's house. The funny thing was that when we were waiting for the restaurant to open, I wondered around and found something that I've been lookin' for even before I came to Japan! The ALT/foreigner bar named Sala! We then headed into the restaurant, had some grubbin' food and tons and tons of drinks. I wasn't expecting to drink so much cuz I was still headin' out to party in Roppongi for an all nighter. But, you cannot refuse when the principal and vice principal and other teachers pour it for you. Got a chance to chat with Ishimura sensei (art teacher) for the first time. Miyakawa and Takeuchi sensei were tryin' to hook me up with our waitress. Anyhow..after all that, all the teachers and even me, gave a little speech about the gashhosai. After drinks, Takeuchi took me to Sala for some more. I guess I wasn't plannin' on takin' a nap @ Kaoru's before goin' out. From what my sister and Neille told me about it, it wasn't what I expected. I had the preconceived notion that all the employees could speak english...boy was I wrong. When I did speak English...they looked at me all funny. Oh wellz. Takeuchi and I had a few beers before he went to the Wild Turkey. I just had a Malibu Rum & Coke. Afterwards, I got on the train and headed to Asakusa to meet up with Kaoru. Got to Asakusabashi and took a cab to her restaurant/house. Thinkin' I could sleep for a little bit, she greeted me at the door and said let's go! I was like, what!? So then we headed out to Roppongi to meet up with Aki.

Got to Roppongi and met up with Aki. She shocked me with her new FOMA cell phone. It's pretty dope! But she still has her old PHS too. Anyhow, since they didn't eat, we headed to Saizeriya for some food. Kicked there for awhile and then headed to Hobson's to meet up with the fellas. Scott, Rick and Bryan were there. Met Edwin for the first time as well as some girls that Bryan brought. That guy is a good person to know. Very well connected in Tokyo. As we waited for some more peeps, Aki and Kaoru got some ice cream at Hobson's and then we went into Muse. I didn't know that girls were free. Guys had to pay about $10 but got a free drink ticket. We got inside and is wasn't too packed. Got some drinks, chilled downstairs in the lounge and then headed back up to chill. Got introduced to this girl Lisa (Vancouver, graphic/web designer) who's friends with Bryan. She used to live in Japan like 2 years ago. We chatted and I pitched her the BA line. Unfortunately I didn't have any cards on me, but I'll be sure to get in touch with her again. While I was talkin' with Kaoru and Aki, I hear this familiar voice say,"that guy looks familiar...is that Kevin?". When I turn around, to my surprise, I see Kyoko. I introduce her to Kaoru and Aki and then they start goin' off in super fast Japanese. I also saw John there too. Another koo kat that's well connected in Tokyo. When we went back down to the lounge, I noticed that Aki wasn't with us. Kaoru said that she's dancing with some guy. I was like huh!? Oh yeah? Good for her. What I didn't realize was that we wouldn't really see her for the rest of the night. While we were chillin' and talkin', Rick came over to chat with Kaoru and I. He busted out his Japanese for her and they chatted it up for a while. Rick is a koo guy. Always lookin' out. It's good to have him as one of my senpais! I also got a chance to talk to Edwin some more, really koo and funny guy. We chatted about all kinds of stuff. Also spoke with Scott a bit. Talked about his English school him and his wife started up. May try to get some private contracts through that. Around this time, Kaoru and I were a little worried about Aki, after we found her playin' ping pong, we went to the dance floor. I must say that this night, they were playin' some good beats. Last time, the music was kinda wack, mostly trance, but that nite, it was mostly hip hop. Some songs I haven't heard in a long time! Went back down to chill and met Hiromi (Lives in Yokohama, went to college in the states, works for Bloomberg), her English was very good. She went to school in Wisconsin and worked in Seattle for a bit but for some reason, she likes Wisconsin better than Seattle. When we went to look for Aki again, she was in the upstairs lounge chillin' with that guy.

We all decided to head out around 0400ish and go get some ramen. Aki said she that she's gonna stay so we got our stuff out of the locker and gave her the key before leaving. Since Kaoru had to go wakeboarding the next day, she took a cab home from the club. The only peeps left were: Rick, Bryan, Edwin, Scott, Lisa, Hiromi, Kyoko and I. We went to this pretty ghetto ramen place and had to sit outside on upside down, economy sized shoyu cans with egg cartons for a cushion. The ramen was grubbin' and so was the gyoza. Since everyone had to go different places, Lisa, Hiromi and I took a cab to Ebisu eki. Lisa and Hiromi were both going to Yokohama, but Lisa decided to go pick up her shopping bags she left in a locker in Shibuya first. So Hiromi and I headed to Shinagawa to catch the Yokosuka line, she headed to Yokohama, I headed to Chiba. I pretty much have been up for about 24 hours now and totally passed out on the train. Woke up and realized that I was in Chiba!!! Luckily that was the last stop before it headed back to Funabashi. Fortunately, Tsudanuma station was only 2 stops away. Got home around 0800ish and crashed out.

Saturday

Woke up @ around 1430 and pretty much chilled the whole day. Got call from Atsuko san, invited me over for dinner. She made some grubbin' food as usual. We watched the women's volleyball against China. Man, China is strong! No wonder they're the #1 team in world. They have this one girl who's 197cm (for you metrically challenged, that's about 6'5") who easily hit over the Japan block. Since the match didn't take that long, Yanase san went to bed and Atsuko san and I watched this drama with Konishi Manami called Suntory Mystery. The main girl had this power...kinda along the lines of the guy from the Green Mile. Where they're able to see the destiny of the people when they touch them. Since it was sponsored by Suntory, pretty much all of the CM's (commercials) were some sort of Suntory product. They even went as far as putting it into the drama! All the tea and water bottles were clearly by Suntory.

Sunday

Woke up and pretty much did 3 loads of laundry. It was pretty warm...about 10 degrees warmer than it has been. Unfortunately it was windy as hell! So my laundry pole kept on falling down!! @ around 1500ish, I headed to Funabashi downtown for a spam sandwich @ Freshness Burger. I must say that is was very, very tasty. Afterwards, headed to Shibuya Sports Center but kinda didn't know where I was, so I called Rick up and he guided me in the right direction. The center is a pretty nice place. Met all kinds of new folks: Alex (from eastern Canada, English teacher, been in Japan for 5 years), David (from Dallas, Texas A&M grad, MIS degree, 26, only been in Japan since September), Craig (JA, from LA, 40, graphic designer, has his own company, friend of Bryan's older brother), Lloyd (another friend of Bryan's older brother), Ken (JA, from LA), Derek (happa, from Las Vegas, pretty good baller) and some other people.

Discovered a new way to avoid the Chinese girls that ask you for a massage outside of Tsudanuma eki. Just gotta hit the stairs to the right.

After ball, headed to Mos Burger with Bryan, Sean and Yatsu (Bryan's neighbor and brother's friend, from Sendai)

Monday

Found out that one of our students got 3rd place in all of Chiba prefecture in Kendo.

Today's schedule was Tuesday's schedule, so it was busy.

Since I was totally sore from playin' bball from the night before, I was only gonna help out and observe the practice. I forgot that it was Monday and that Aso san comes to coach that day. While I was takin' a nap in the PE office, he wakes me up and tells me to get out here to play. I'm in frickin' jeans! I don't even have my contacts! He selectively tuned that out and told me again to get on the court.

Dinner @ Ikko. Had some grubbin' sukiyaki, miso shiru and natto gohan. Chatted with Kita san and Sensei for most of the night. Also noticed that Mama got a haircut. After dinner, came home and chatted a bit and then went to sleep!

Tuesday

Another lax day @ school. Since we have an assembly, the classes are short as well no 5th period. Today's assembly was Rakugo. A Japanese style, comedian/talent show. Hmmm...kinda hard to explain. There's nothing really like it back home. Though I couldn't understand some of the dialogue, I really enjoyed the magician. Especially when he asked Kuroda & Miyahara sensei to come up as volunteers! Afterwards, helped clean up a bit and chatted with Tomoko and Mio (from the girls bball team). Then headed back to the teacher's room and helped Honda sensei get the internet up and running. I don't know what's wrong with our router here, but it seems to hang up every so often and the quick fix is to just switch it on and off.

Left school @ around 16:25ish to go to my last dentist appointment! Now I only have to come back for checkups, no more work! Hip Hip Hooray!

Mama told me to come by her place before dinner cuz she was going to take me shopping for some sake. When I got there after my dentist appointment, I was totally shocked that she already got some Kubota for me. And it was the super economy sized one too!!! When I asked how much it was, she told me it was a gift from her and her husband. She's so sweet! I love her!!

@ around 1900ish, got on my bike and headed to Kita Narashino. Since I've never been there on my bike, I was just using intution to figure out how to get there. When I got to Narashino eki, I heard a voice say Kevin and to my pleasant surprise, it was Mikie! Phew!!! Good thing I found her cuz she knows the way for sure. Got to Kita Nara, and went to Makudonarudo (McDonald's) to meet up with Natsuyo. We then headed to Watami, the same place Daisuke and I went 2 weeks ago. Had some food and drinks and talked. These girls all have totally different personalities, it's weird to see them together. We were there for about
4 hours and then called it a night. Junko headed home to Takanekodan, Natsuyo to Yachio and Mikie and I back to Takinoi. Last words from Mikie were omiyage matteru (I'll be waiting for my souvenir), my response mochiron (of course!)

Wednesday

My last day @ school for the month. Had some problems today with the 7th graders. One 7th grader threatened another one with scissors and actually hit the other kid with it. Some parents are here, it's kind of a mess right now.

So I'm looking at my obento (it's chukyokyo = funabashi school meeting; so there's no school lunch) right now, and I get depressed because the company we used to use for our obentos went out of business. They had the grubbin': yakiniku, karaage, katsudon, etc... This obento looks like crap! It comes in a nice laquer box but who cares if the food looks and tastes like crap!!!

It's been pretty loud lately @ school with all the people coming to do cut some of the tree branches down.

Takahashi sensei has been walkin' like a Jijii lately cuz he's havin' back problems.

Closing Words

Here's something my mom sent me. Enjoy!

AIRLINE SAFETY

Alaska Airlines -- Thanks to a retired Alaska Airlines
Captain for sending this "paraphrase" of a memorable
safety PA from their Flight Attendants.
In his own words: "I was flying to San Francisco
from Seattle this weekend, and the flight attendant
reading the flight safety information had the whole
plane looking at each other like 'what the heck?'
(Getting Seattle people to look at each other is an
accomplishment.) So once we got airborne, I took
out my laptop and typed up what she said so I
wouldn't forget. I've left out a few parts I'm sure, but
this is most of it."

Before takeoff...
"Hello, and welcome to Alaska Flight 438 to San
Francisco. If you're going to San Francisco, you're in
the right place. If you're not going to San Francisco,
you're about to have a really long evening."
"We'd like to tell you now about some important
safety features of this aircraft. The most important
safety feature we have aboard this plane is...The
Flight Attendants. Please look at one now."
"There are 5 exits aboard this plane: 2 at the front,
2 over the wings, and one out the plane's rear end. If
you're seated in one of the exit rows, please do not
store your bags by your feet. That would be a really
bad idea. Please take a moment and look around
and find the nearest exit. Count the rows of seats
between you and the exit. In the event that the need
arises to find one, trust me, you'll be glad you did.
We have pretty blinking lights on the floor that will
blink in the direction of the exits. White ones along
the normal rows, and pretty red ones at the exit rows."
"In the event of a loss of cabin pressure these
baggy things will drop down over your head. You
stick it over your nose and mouth like the flight
attendant is doing now. The bag won't inflate, but
there's oxygen there, promise. If you are sitting next
to a small child, or someone who is acting like a
small child, please do us all a favor and put on your
mask first. If you are traveling with two or more
children, please take a moment now to decide
which one is your favorite. Help that one first, and
then work your way down."
"In the seat pocket in front of you is a pamphlet
about the safety features of this plane. I usually use
it as a fan when I'm having my own personal summer.
It makes a very good fan. It also has pretty pictures.
Please take it out and play with it now."
"Please take a moment now to make sure your
seat belts are fastened low and tight about your waist.
To fasten the belt, insert the metal tab into the buckle.
To release, it's a pulley thing -- not a pushy thing like
your car because you're in an airplane -- HELLOOO!!"
"There is no smoking in the cabin on this flight.
There is also no smoking in the lavatories. If we see
smoke coming from the lavatories, we will assume
you are on fire and put you out. This is a free service
we provide. There are two smoking sections on this
flight, one outside each wing exit. We do have a
movie in the smoking sections tonight...hold on, let
me check what it is...Oh here it is; the movie tonight
is 'Gone with the Wind.' "
"In a moment we will be turning off the cabin
lights, and it's going to get really dark, really fast. If
you're afraid of the dark, now would be a good time
to reach up and press the yellow button. The yellow
button turns on your reading light. Please don't press
the orange button unless you absolutely have to. The
orange button is your seat ejection button."
"We're glad to have you with us on board this
flight. Thank you for choosing Alaska Air, and giving
us your business and your money. If there's anything
we can do to make you more comfortable, please
don't hesitate to ask."
"If you all weren't strapped down you would have
given me a standing ovation, wouldn't you?"
After landing...
"Welcome to the San Francisco International
Airport. Sorry about the bumpy landing. It's not the
captain's fault. It's not the copilot's fault. It's the
asphalt."
"Please remain seated until the plane is parked
at the gate. At no time in history has a passenger
beaten a plane to the gate. So please don't even try.
Please be careful opening the overhead bins because
'shift happens'."

School, Volleyball & Setsu's Sayonara Party, Yaki Niku

11.10

Man...it's frickin' cold today! The rain ain't helpin the situation either.

School was school today. Nothing really exciting. Had kind of a stomach ache earlier in the day.

Went to MatsuKiyo for groceries for dinner. Made some slammin' penne pasta with eggplant, onions, mushrooms & ground beef in a tomato sauce

Came home, got some mail from Photo.com that my pic, Mukurikaike, might be published in their Endless Journeys book. It was from the time I climbed Mt. Tateyama w/Takeuchi sensei.

Japan's national team was playin' again, this time against Poland. Poland has one of the most strongest hitters in the tournament by the name of Glinka. As for Japan's team, the hype is all around the two 19 year old swing hitters, Oyama & Kurihara and the veteran middle blocker & team captain, Yoshihara. But, after seeing a handful of games and analyzing many situations, I've come to the unbiased conclusion that when in doubt, set Takahashi. She's the 6th leading scorer, 5th leading spiker, 9th best server and 4th best passer in the tournament...all that mere height of 5'7"! When Japan needed her most, that being in the 5th game tie break with Poland, Takeshita knew who to set...Takahashi. She couldn't be stopped. I compare her hitting style with Bob Ctvrtlik, the king of tooling the block. I think that she hits huts and reds the best. So after Japan overcame Poland in a dramatic game 5, the announcer couldn't hold keep his composure, so guess who comes out to take over for him...none other than Takahashi! She's a comedian too!

11.11

Man...it's frickin' colder today! And it's been raining from morning to evening!

Today is Pockey no Hi (Pockey Day) because it's November 11th = 1111

Taught only 2 7th grade classes today. During 3rd and 4th period, prepared the cards for the 9th grade elective game. The class went well, but kinda unfair because of Okabe-san and Matsuzaka-san. They're English level is way above the other students. Matsuzaka almost sneaked one by me.

While I was waiting for the train, I realized, after readin' all the advertisements, that I missed my dentist appointment yesterday. Aaarrgghhh. I called Nakamura-san and she said it was all good and not to trip.

Met up with Kazue @ the office and headed to their favorite bar in this small 'ol alley in downtown Funabashi. Saw Oshima san leaving. When we got to the place, it's pretty small but there was tons of food there. I think this is the place where my dad told me about. Since I had to pay (about $50), I was definitely goin' to get my money's worth. I was eating constantly for 3 hours! They sure make their drinks strong there too! Can't believe this little 'ol place has 3 hostesses. 2 were cute but there was one who was kinda old. She told me that she knew my dad. There were so many people that showed up: Uro san, Atsuko san, Katsuta san, Ono san, Iwai san, Inoue san, Mitani san, Kawasaki san, Nishiguchi san, a lot of other people as well as the old mayor, Ohashi san and his wife. Of course, Tajima san and Kazue san was there too. Atsuko san gave me a hard time for not being in contact with her lately. It's funny how I can totally understand Atsuko's nihongo. Atsuko san no nihongo o wakariyasui yo Mitani san kept on talkin' to me in his funny/broken English while constantly trying to pour me more to drink. @ around 2200ish, the mic was passed around so that everyone could introduce themselves and say something bout Setsu. Ono san, Mitani san and Tajima san were all comedians! The former mayor Ohashi san gave this long old monologue which reminded me of one of his sister city speeches. He got all philosophical and stuff. When it was my turn, I introduced myself and made sure that everyone knew that I was Sakamoto's son. I tried to speak as much Japanese as I could, with the help of Tajima, Atsuko san and Mitani san. I got what I had to say out but then Setsu overwhelmed me with a hug and kiss. Hehehe...

11.12

Wow! The sun has finally come out!!!

Kinda boring day today. Only had 3 classes. Played a game with Seri sensei's class and they did aite. Played it with the 8th grade elective class, didn't turn out so well. At lunchtime, Iwase-kun is still buggin' me bout takin' him to go eat some miso ramen. The last class was 1-5 aka. The Jungle. I feel sorry for some of the students who really want to learn in there. There are so many distractive kids, it's gotten to the point where it's out of hand and nothing we do can change that. It might be the fact that the homeroom teacher is Abiru sensei.

Played bball. I was able to last all throughout the warm up drills. However, when it came to the 2-man and 3-man drills, Ryo (9th grader) and I took turns with Yumie and Mika (the 9th grade stars of the girls team). Abiru sensei was showing Ryo different ways to create off the first step. Abiru sensei asked me to guard him, he actually took me a couple of times! I was totally surprised!! During the 3-on-3 scrimmage drill, I had Ryo and Saeki kun (7th grader) on my team and Ryo kept on turning the ball over. I was givin' him a hard time bout it but he knew I was jokin'. Towards the end of practice, the other 9th grade girls showed up and I taught Shoko's sister how to shoot one-handed shot. It's awkward to see girls shoot with one hand other than layups. After practice, I saw that I had 3 missed calls from Suga. I was supposed to hang out with Yu, but he had a job interview the next day so we postponed the festivities til after I come back from Cali. So I call Suga up, he tells me that he decided to go eat yakiniku again and wanted to see if I can come. I met up with him and saw Takushi and 2 other Korean people that I know from before but forget their names. It's always interesting to talk with Takun because he always be switchin' from Japanese to English then to Korean then back to English then some more Japanese then more Korean and so on...you get the picture. I'm slowly learning a little bit of Korean everytime I go out to eat with Suga and the crew. We ate some grubbin' food and chatted til about 2230ish and then called it a night. For the record, I didn't have a sip of alcohol. ;p

11.13

Woke up and got an IM from Don sayin' that there might be a chance that he's coming out to Japan THIS WEEKEND! When I replied, he never responded back...so I don' t know any details.

Got to school just in time for the teacher's meeting. Had 4 classes today, but it actually was only 2 full classes because the other 2 had dental check ups, so that took about half the period.

Lunch was grubbin' as usual.

Since tomorrow is the music festival for our school, all the classes are gettin' their final singing practice in. I got to observe Seri sensei's class. It's amazing to see how these young 7th graders take on responsibility and facilitate the practice in an orderly fashion. This could never happen back home.

Man...just when Takahashi is on fire...in the third game, when given the opportunity, she hasn't come through. I still think that if the 19 year olds didn't miss all their serves, Japan wouldn't had a better chance. But hey, they're playin' the 3rd best team in the tournament.

Cut my hair, ate some curry for dinner and chatted with Mark.

Tomorrow is gonna be a long day, gotta be ready by 0730 cuz Takahashi sensei is pickin' me up for our school's chorus competition. Then it's drinkin' with the teachers and following that up with an all nighter in Roppongi.

BTW...only one more week til I'm back home!!!

Ok...so I'm watching the Japan vs. Dominican Republic and Takahashi can't be stopped. Plus, she's playin' some mad defense. She just pancaked a ball. She's only 5'7" but she had crazy hops! Whether it's 4s, huts or stacks, it doesn't matter....the Dominicans can't stop her.

Lightning is a massive buildup of static electricity. Seconds before you are struck by lightning, all of the hair on your head will stand straight up. Lightning kills approximately 300 Americans every year - more than any other type of natural disaster. Most lightning deaths occur during the summer, when people spend more time outdoors. Lightning tends to strike the most conspicuous person or object in a group; golfers are often struck while holding a metal pin or swinging a club.

The Past Weekend

Friday

This was the last day that the student teachers will be at my school. So their classes were observed by the teachers. After class, I had to eat lunch early because I had to go to Tsuboi junior high school for a seminar.

Ihato sensei picked me up and I got to meet Terry who is from Wales. An interesting cat. We then went to pick up another ALT named Jeff from Buffalo. We then headed to Tsuboi. Met Cindy (from Michigan), Tsuboi's ALT. Ihato then brought Colleen (from New Zealand) and Mark (from Australia). We were introduced to the english teacher, social studies teacher and the man who is in charge of this discussion. We then went to the classroom and introduced ourselves and broke up into smaller groups, each group having 1 ALT. The students introduced themselves and we played games. The leader of the discussion, Kuze san, then gave us some kujira (whale) to eat. What was funny, is that we didn't even talk about whales in our small groups with the exception of Cindy's group. Well...we have to go back there again Thursday and the following Tuesday. I don't mind goin' cuz we get to leave school early. After the discussion was over, some of the ALTs went for a drink near Kita Narashino. Got to talk to some of the ALTs which I never really get a chance to do. Found out the closest station Cindy lives near is Inaricho. The same as Kaoru. I'm really fortunate that I can bike to school while the other ALTs all commute by train from Tokyo or Ichikawa.

Went back to school for a minute to get all my things. It was very natsukashi for me because I walked from Narashino eki which I haven't done since I moved into my apartment. After school, headed home and went to run some errands. Before meeting up with Kaoru and Hide @ Yakuendai eki, I went to Ikko for dinner and some drinks. Hashimoto san came with me. After meeting up with Kaoru and Hide, we headed to Serenade for some food, drinks and karaoke. After a couple of drinks...things started to get fuzzy. I didn't realize that we were there til 0330. Made it home somehow but I do remember everything since coming home. We didn't go to sleep til like 0530ish.

saturday

Woke up @ around 1000ish and started cooking breakfast. Also found out that Kaoru forgot her ketai @ Serenade. But we wouldn't be able to get it til later that evening. I made some corned beef hash with onions and corn over rice with an over easy egg. While we ate, we watched Animatrix, with Japanese dialog so that Hide and Kaoru could understand. After the movie and meal, we headed over to Makuhari to go see Kill Bill. Yes, I went to see it again. It's a totally different movie the second time. Got to see things that I missed from the first time. From the Japanese perspective, my friends who have seen it all say that it's very funny. If ya'll haven't seen it yet, go out and see it. After the movie, Hide and Kaoru bought all these 100 yen toys from the vending machines...I forget what they're called in Japanese....hmmm...gatcha ben?.

Headed to Ikko around 1800ish and feasted on some: sanma, kotechan, natto ten, miso shiru, and kaki. Daisuke joined us around 1900ish and we had some more natto ten and drinks. Hide had to take off early cuz he had to meet up with his friend from college. The women's volleyball world championships were on and I didn't hesitate to let everyone know how fond I am of Takahashi Miyuki, who plays opposite for the team. She can do it all: serve, spike, block, set, pass and dig. We then headed out of Ikko so that Kaoru can get her phone. Dropped her off at the station and then headed to Try 'em with Daisuke. Had some Kubota, chatted up with Yoko and Georgia then headed out. Daisuke went home and I stopped over at Serenade. Was surprised to see Hashimoto there. Chilled there for awhile and then called it a night.

Sunday

Just been chillin' at home all day. It's always nice to just relax and not do anything or go out.

Well...Kohiyama called me to come to Ikko. When I got there, Kita & Sakamoto were there. This was around 1530ish. I just got back now, 2000ish. Shacho, Mori, Kobi, End & Yoko all came thru...the regulars. I forgot to pay last night so everyone gave me a hard time bout that. Mama was koo about it. So it's all good yo!

Anyhow...I'm gonna go to bed early tonite.

11.03.03

Got to Shibuya @ around 1530ish...a little late but it turned out that it didn't really matter, cuz Yu's old college's, Aoyama Gakuin, festival was sorta canceled due to the rain. We met up with Kaori and her friend from Thailand whose studyin' in Hayward. We chilled at a coffee shop and talked for a bit. Pronto, a cafe @ around 1700ish, turns into a cafe/pub, the lights dim a bit and there's no non-smokin' sections. We left before we could see it turn into a full pub. Kaori was intrigued by this and went to ask what exactly happens when they turn into a pub. She returned and told us that the coffee machines get covered by doors and these other doors open up with all the alcohol. Even the menu flips around to show the alcoholic drinks. Only in Japan.

Afterwards, we headed to Shibuya and on the way, we saw Yu's old college in a school parade, with cheerleaders and a marching band. Kinda weird to see that in the streets of Tokyo. We got to main part of Shibuya and parted ways with Kaori and her friend. Yu and I then headed to Freshness burger cuz I wanted to grab a snack before dinner. I tried the new Spam sandwich and I must say, that it was pretty good. They had a special sauce along with a fried egg on tasty bread. Hmm hmmmm hmmmmmmmmm. After I grubbed, Yu needed to find a birthday gift for A-chan. At first, he couldn't find anything good, but in the end, he found this nice candle which was pretty dope. We met up with one of Yu's friends, Hide (a DJ), and then headed to the restaurant. While Yu and Hide were on their phones tryin' to get a hold of everyone and to make sure that they knew where the restaurant is, I was just chillin' and people watchin'. Hide and Yu pointed out this one dude being carried by like 4 of his friends. This guy was OVER. When 1900 came around, we just went in and got a drink while waiting for the other people to arrive. The next person to arrive was Seiko (reggae dancer). The next peeps to arrive were Setochi (MC) and A-chan (manager). The restaurant we went to only served chicken. But all the dishes were really good. Since A-chan wanted to practice english, we made a deal that she has to talk to me in English, while I talk to her in only Japanese. Unfortunately, she didn't get too much practice in since it was her birthday and she was matchin' me drink for drink. Ayuchi (graphic designer/flyer designer) came through. Hide, Setochi and Seiko were pretty funny when they spoke to me. A tiny bit of English with a lot of Japanese. The next person to arrive was Makiko whom I met at the flea market 2 months ago. Then Kotomi (a nurse) arrived and after awhile, toasting each time someone new comes, started to take it's toll. A-chan introduced me to this sho chu from Hokkaido that I've never had before. I think the name was tantakatan which was hella smooth. Had one with water and another with oolong tea. Some MORE people started to come: Hanzo (DJ or MC), Darisan (DJ or MC), Daichi (DJ or MC) & Noriko (photographer). Of course they all came at different times which made it hard to remember whether they were a DJ or MC or a hype man. Around this time, Hanzo brought out his DV Cam and I saw Seiko watching some video on screen. She told me to come check it out. As I watching it, it looked like a performance of some kind. She then tells me that she's coming out to perform. I only have one word for what she showed me...DADADAAAAAMMMMNNNN!!! I had to confirm with Yu (who was pretty buzzed at the time) that this is same girl in the video. After we had all the yakitori and small stuff, we ordered sukiyaki and miso ramen. It was interesting to meet Yu's friends in a laid back, chill environment. When we left the restaurant, we were almost at the station when I realized that I left my umbrella there. Yu told me just to forget it, you can get another one, but I was like nah man...that's my favorite umbrella. I was about to say ffff it, but Ayuchi volunteered to go back with me cuz I think she forgot her umbrella too. Well I want to thank Yu for always lookin' out and introducing me to his friends. It was good times fo sho!

Well...goin' to Shibuya for 4 days straight was kinda crazy. Not as bad as I once thought earlier. But I'm still gonna take a break from it until we play ball next Sunday.

11.04.03

Well today it was back to the grind. Thank god I only had to teach 2 classes. Went to the dentist, I'm finally have one more appointment left. Ate some dinner, chatted up a bit, installed some virus software on my desktop and notebook. Had some problems with my notebook not connecting to the internet. Not sure what the problem is, but somehow it fixed itself. Watched my tv shows which was totally hilarious. A new twist to the London Hearts show.

11.05.03

Another day @ school. I forgot my notebook @ my apt! Arrrgghhh!!! Oh wellz... Played ball after school for a bit. Gotta get in shape. The J was off at first, but once I got warmed up, everything was fallin'! Met up with Daisuke for dinner @ Kita Narashino. Had some grubbin' food and I can't believe we killed a whole big bottle of Kagoshima sho chu! Never done that before. Came home and instantly crashed out.

11.06.03

It was raining this morning so it made my commute to school a little difficult. Got to school and had to start doin' research about whales. I'm speakin' @ Tsuboi junior high tomorrow and the topic is about whales. After doin' some research, I actually found out some interesting stuff about the whales, whaling and how Japan is finding loopholes to get whales for food. We had special student teachers, 8th graders, as guest teachers in the 7th grade classes. I was surprised to see Tanaka kun as Takahashi sensei's assistant. I never saw Tanaka kun so calm, quiet and reserved ever! He was actually professional! Something that doesn't even come close to describe how he is in class!! I gots to clean up the apt a bit cuz Hide and Kaoru are coming over tomorrow night. Going to see Matrix Revolutions tonite with Yu's family. Spoke to Don today and he said that it sucked @$$!!! Spoke to Tri and he said it was ok. But kinda wack in some places. Got an email from Rick about another one of his buddies, who ross and michelle know from college is heading out, so he officially called me out next Friday night. Here are some pics from last weekend. Gosh...I'm plannin' on seeing Yu perform on Tuesday night which will be an all nighter, followed up by Friday night. Man...Tokyo life is no joke, yo!!! Also got my books from Amazon in...2 weeks early! Gonna start up Count Zero by William Gibson. Wellz...gonna wrap this up.

Nearly a quarter of all lead exposure comes from drinking water. A toxic metal, lead can cause serious health hazards and even brain damage. The Environmental Protectino Agency revealed that over 10% of the U.S. populatino relies on water systems with unsafe levels of lead. The EPA carefully explained it would be wrong to assume that 30 million people always drink unsafe water; instead, 30 million people drink from sources that are unsafe from time to time. The Past Week

10.27.03

Woke up at around 6ish since I went to bed early the night before. It was a chillin' day, just stayed at home and chatted it up with folks.

For dinner headed to Ikko. Shacho treated me to dinner and drinks. Fukuoka Daiei Hawks beat the Hanshin Tigers in game 7 of the Japan World Series. Came home and crashed out.

10.28.03

Woke up again pretty early, worked out, made some maple/brown sugar oatmeal and chatted with Gee, Hooli and Jookie. Gee's pops sold the pimp daddy caddy and is replacin' it with...none other than a SL55! Was talkin' to Jookie about tradin' for AK-47. He needs big men and I have a lot of those. Also was talkin' to Hooli bout who the tops teams are in our league as well as the worst ones.

Got to school a tad bit late cuz it was rainin' pretty hard. Taught 7th & 8th grade today. For lunch, had some grubbin' saba and gave my grapes to Horiguchi kun, who collected about 15 or so from other 7th graders. Horiguchi kun is the 7th grade garbage disposal. We had an awards assembly for 5th period, so we didn't have the 9th grade elective class.

10.29.03

A normal day. Taught 2-5 with Takai again. Other than these 2 students, the class is dead quiet. It took a lot out of me to get them enthused. Taught the 8th grade elective class with Takahashi sensei...played a game that really didn't work too well. We prohibited them from talkin' in Japanese, hoping they would converse in English, but to no avail, it was silent during the whole game. These aren't the brightest of kids either. It was a matching game where each student had a card taped their back. Without looking at their card, they are to find their match amongst the students. When posed with a minor problem, they couldn't come up with an easy solution; lining up in a single file line and by process of elimination, determine who your match was. It was funny to see all of them walk around and looking at each other's backs.

Dinner consisted of some tonkatsu, shiro maguro and vegetables.

Some interestin' tv programs were on tonite. One starrin' one of my fav celebrities.

Spoke to Gee for a while. He has some major problems about the nba fantasy league and his team. He's almost given up on the season...and it JUST started.

Finished Crypto. Ending was kinda weak.

10.30.03

Saw Ikko no mama again this morning but this time I wasn't runnin' late.

So Mikami san went to Kumamoto with her family and brought back some cookies.

My sister's friend Louis called me today. We're supposed to hang out either tonite, tomorrow or this weekend.

I had to confiscate Hara kun's Harry Potter book cuz he was readin' in class. He was shocked that I hate Harry Potter.

Kicked it with Miyakawa sensei after lunch today. Found out that he can speak a little Russian and French. So we were havin' some fun with these 8th graders. Confusing them with a mix of Japanese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. They were so confused.

Now that I have an internet connection @ work, I've been at my desk more and more lately. I finally installed Macromedia MX. So I've been redoin' my website.

After school, headed to Ikko. The whole crew showed up. Had some grubbin' food, as always, but around 2130ish, Mama asked me to come outside. I was like, uhmmm...why? So she took me back to her apartment to introduce me to her...husband! He was such a cool guy. Descent english and we talked bout all kinds of stuff ranging from Niigata sake to my experiences in Japan. We ended up chattin' for about an hour! Came home, crashed out.

10.31.03

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

I hope all my friends have a good time at the Halloween party. Ya'll gots to take lots of pics to share the experience with me, aite!

Taught the dreaded 2-5 class again. Today was just too much for me. I almost blew up on them but kept it to myself until I got back the teacher's room. Then I vented my frustration to Takeuchi sensei. However, I'm not sure he fully understood what I said cuz I was in venting/frustration mode. Oh well...

Also taught 2-3. A much better class. Played a good game that Takai came up with. Yes, I did say Takai. She's gettin' a little bit better now.

Started readin' another book, The Best American Short Stories 1999, which was given to me by Ha san.

Did the game we tried to do in the 8th grade elective class with the 9th graders. It worked out better. The funny thing was that the 2 students who broke the rules by speakin' Japanese, ended up being a match and finishing first. Hmmm...sounds fishy to me.

During cleanin', this one 9th grader dried his wet hands on my back so I had to "discipline" him by putting water on his face by way of my hand. Then some other 9th graders thought they were tough shiet by steppin' up to me...not in a serious way. We then continued on seeing how hard we could hit eachother in the stomachs. Ahh...the games we play as kids.

Anyhow...

Got a call from Louis, meet up @ Shibuya station @ 2000. Got to meet Louis, Mark (31, finance, Louis' younger brother, lives in Irvine) and Mark's buddy Bryan (29, JET, ABC, from Texas/Irvine/SF, lives in Yokohama, comedian, married, wife is 8 months pregnant). On our way to gettin' a bite to eat @ Mos Burger, we had to walk through all kinds of these "sales" men tryin' to either get us to come to their store or into their "lounge". Anyhow, Bryan's new thing is whenever an African, who tries to pass out his fliers when we're clearly not interested, he challenges them to a freestyle battle. That usually gets a this weird look of surprise/amazement/shock. This one dude was hella persistant at me. If these "people" walk with you for longer than 5 seconds, it means that their persistant. But this dude, was walkin' with for like a minute! If you make me stop walkin' just to look at your face to get my idea across, then he was pretty close in gettin' bombed on. Which wasn't a problem, cuz I had my security of Korean body builder brothers! Got to Mos (finally), Lou had 2 spicy cheese burgers. I just got a plain one. We then headed to Tengu for some drinks and some snacks. Met up with one of Bryan's friends Kevin (26, JET, from Hawaii, lives in Yokohama, awesome singer). Chatted for a bit and met up with one of Mark and Bryan's friends, Yuka (29, former model, born in the mutherland but now lives in SoCal) Supposedly goin' to her friend's party and meet all of her model friends but that didn't work out cuz the club was whack. Met up with Rich (34, Works for Fidelity, my sister and ross' friend from down south, engaged, met him before while he was living in SF) and after we left that wack @$$ club, we headed to a karaoke place to pass some time. Kevin got down and was singin' like a pro. Durin' this time, a girl accidently came into our room thinkin' it was her room. She later brought her friend and we had Kevin sing a song for them. We got them some wine and after hearing Kevin put it down, they were instantly were sprung. One girl gave him her number right there. But they bounced out hella quick, so Bryan explains we got punked again. But it was all good, they were kinda wack anywayz. Around this time (roughly 2330), we have decided that it was gonna be an all nighter. We headed to Roppongi to meet up with one of Rich's buddies Bryan (32, MTV Japan web production manager, born n raised in SF, played bball for Troop 12 & Taisho, knows a lot of peeps in Tokyo, comedian) and some of his buddies: Sean (34, works for Accenture, from SF, played bball, knows Bryan Nose, married, koo kat) and Kentaro (28, born and raised in Japan, lived in NYC for 7 years, english is perfect). We then headed to Heartland (Tri, do you remember drinkin' this beer?) for a drink and to meet up with some other peeps. After a while, Amy, Hiroko and Miyuko came through. Daughters of diplomats, lived all over the world, perfect english. We headed to this place called Muse. It's an interesting place; bars, dance floor with a lounge on the bottom floor where you can play ping pong, pool or darts. Played Bryan in Long Island Ping Pong...takin' a sip after every point. This place had the best Long Islands that I've had in Japan. We kicked it there for a while, just chillin' and chattin' and headed out around 5ish. Decided to go to Tsukiji fish market (THE fish market in JAPAN). It would have been koo to see all the crazy fish, unfortunately, the state of mind that we were in made it just seem like the thing delayin' the time to eat sushi. We finally got to the place but there was a line. It's 0600 on Saturday morning! Damn!! What further made the situation worse was this one american dude was just blabbering away bout work. Bryan and I were bout to say something but luckily the we got seated. So...this was probably the best sushi I've ever had. Man, this stuff was so fresh and tasty. Nothin' like the americanized rolls ya'll be eatin' back home. This is the real deal. After we finished we headed home, Lou, Mark, Bryan and Kevin to Yokohama, me to Funabashi...or "Funbashi" as Rick says. Took me a while to get home but I did it somehow. Got home around 9ish and crashed. What a day...I mean night!

11.01.03

Got up around 1500ish...and chilled for a bit. Went to eat some food @ Ikko. Saw the crew there. When it was around 1830, jumped back on the train and headed back to Shibuya. Met up with the crew from last night with some new peeps: Scott (32, sis and ross' friend from LA, married, started his own english teachin' company), John (33, from SF, works for Bloomburg, another guy who's connected in Tokyo, marathon runner) and Kyoko (25, lives in Matsudo, born and raised in Japan, works for a PR firm, went to school in Michigan for 2 years, english is perfect, really cute) and we headed out tryin' to find a place to chill til 2300. We went to so many different places but never really went inside to any of them. Bryan and Kev got a little fed up, so they went to get 2 6-packs to drink through this whole time. After about an hour of walking and standin' around, John and Scott headed home while the rest us headed to his little isekaya to get some food. Found out it's where all the peeps that play ball go to. Met this koo kat named Timo (26, half german half japanese, 2 passports, 2 totally different names, baller, english is good, comedian) and we talked bout ball and this guy is really into ball and knows his stuff. Can't wait til play with him in 2 weeks! We got some grub there and headed to this other bar in the Cerulean hotel. Hung out there for a while, got to talk to Rick and Brian more. We then headed out to this club called Module (i think) but the place was kinda wack. This was way too loud...totally different from the place went to last night. It also was too crowded. I went to go chill in the corner to get out of the traffic and chatted with Kyoko for a bit. @ Around 0230ish...we decided to call it a night and Rick offered his place to kick it til first train. When we got to Rick's all I had to say was WHOAH!!! His place is dope! We watched Boyz n the Hood which was funny to see the subtitles in Japanese. When 0500 came around, we all headed home. Man...2 all nighters in a row...this can't be good for my body.

On the ride home, there was this group of peeps that went to a Halloween party. This one guy had this elaborate alien/insect costume which brought laughter from everyone. Guess ya'll had to see it. Anyhow...I gots home around 7ish but couldn't fall asleep til like 1000ish. Woke up around 1530ish and got a call from Lou to see if wanted to go to Akihabara with them but I declined so that I could rest some more. Rick called me to confirm to meet in Shibuya @ 1930. Got there, met up with the crew, plus Scott's wife Yasuko and minus Kev. We headed to this isekaya to eat dinner. Met Rick's fiancee, Mika and also Yasuko's sister. Had some grubbin' food and dessert. Said my farewells to Lou and Mark and headed home. Definitely built up a new network of friends and sempais. Now I know for sure, I'll be out here for awhile. Don't get me wrong, I'll be back to visit sometime...but for the years, Japan is gonna be my home.

Man...I'm pretty tired from all this partyin'. It's been tough, but hey, whenever somebody comes out to visit, ya gotta make those sacrifices. It's all good. Anyhow...I'm gonna get ready to go back to Shibuya again! 4 days in a row is tough yo! Gonna kick it with Yu's friends today at his college's festival. It looks as though it's gonna rain, but we'll see. Aite...I'm signing off.
