wow...it's been quite a while since i've updated my blog, huh? been almost 2 weeks, ya?

well...

had the 7th grade vball tournament 2 weekends ago. they lost the first game and in the second game, they lost the first set. i thought it wasn't gonna be a good finish, but they totally turned it around and played like a team. i was totally surprised. as a coach, probably the most fulfillin' thing to see is when your players actually do what you told them in practice. the 8th graders on the other hand...well...we won't go there. anyhow, the 7th graders came out and won the next two. ;)

the next day, met up with rick & mika and we drove down to yokohama to see our new born "nephew", marvin hiroshi furuta. we stopped by in chinatown first to eat some dim sum. this place was huge, no where as huge as ocean star in monterey park but huge in regards to japan. the dim sum...it was pretty good. not bad for yokohama chinatown. but, the bill, man, oh man, it's these things that make miss back home a lot. for 3 ppl, well...mika didn't really eat that much, but rick and i went to town. grand total = $100!?!?!?! after total food coma, we headed down to see the baby. yas' dad wanted me to come down not only to see the baby but to drink with him. marvin is so tiny! he was just chillin', relaxin' on da futon in the middle of the livin' room. scotty dvr'd the magic/76ers game, so we watched that. afterwards, it was time to feed marvin. after some discussion, rick was nominated to do it. man, he was so awkward but this is gonna be him in a year or two... after a few drinks wit pops, we headed back home. i took the train home and crashed.

after the longest time, i was finally able to meet up with rina. we grabbed some coffee @ tully's in aeon. she showed me her pics from hawaii and hokkaido. she has to travel a lot for work cuz she works @ a travel agency. probably gonna take her to ikko since she loves natto.

last friday, the city of funabashi had the jhs/hs ekiden (kinda like a marathon relay race) @ undo koen. our girls did ok but our guys made top 10. it was freezin' cold that day. 6 out of 10 of the runners were from sekiguchi sensei's class. it was also good to see some of my students from my last year's school too. afterwards, we went back to school and the vice principal and some other teachers made curry for all the participants, parents and teachers. unfortunately for the vball team, since they only stayed for the girls' race and left before the guys' race, toita sensei was pretty pissed. in our meetin' after practice the day before, even i understood that they were supposed to stay and cheer the guys on. so on our way back to school, we stopped off at this ramen place and threw all their bags on the ground for them to get. then, when we got back to school, she made them stand outside in da cold, while we at nice & hot curry rice. i felt kinda bad but hey, they did fff up. i don't know what it is with them. the japanese word that best describes them is: hijoushiki na (lack of common sense). after some time, some of the girls came inside to help serve the curry while toita sensei told the other girls to wax the whole gym floor!?! i was like damn! after eatin' 3 super big bowls of curry, i took a nap in the gym office. when i woke up, the girls were done with the gym and as a partin' gift, they got to take some curry rice home, however, without the curry!?!? yet again, i was like damn!?! i wonder when these girls will ever learn....

on da weekend, had bball in shibuya. there was only like 14 guys that showed up. i was on the first team (the first 5 who make the freethrow). we had pat @ the 5 (big white guy, think ben wallace with a j), timo @ the 4 (tall, lanky, half german/half japanese cat whose game is like dirk. he has completely changed his game around. he's actually playin' smarter and he listens to my advice), takashi (another native guy, great all around game, can run the floor and likes slashin' to the hoop. think tracy mcgrady w/post moves), ken @ da 2 (ja guy from socal, had a hairline fracture in his foot, 2nd game back. plays good d, blocks out and has nice little 15 ft. pull up j) and me @ da 1. i was droppin' dimes like there was no tomorrow. the "new" timo is a lot more fun to play with. he doesn't force up stupid shots and looks to pass when he's double or triple teamed. he's also movin' great w/o the ball. if you do that, i'll get ya the rock. takashi, i don't have to worry bout. i must've hooked him up at least 4 times a game. ken and pat were boardin' and hittin' their j's with my weak side screens. all in all, we had a well balanced team, young guys and old guys, we had height and speed. we went on a 7 game winnin' streak. we were a dynasty yo! unfortunately we lost the last game on a pull j by "downtown al". i had my hand in his face too, but he got a pretty good bounce... afterwards, me, rick, b and scott went to mos burger for dinner. after that, we went back to b's to chill and watch harold and kumar. it was an aite movie, maybe a little bit too hyped up. then i proceeded to kick b's @$$ in madden. he almost got me one game where i had 5 to's, but he lost it at the end and i came back. we keep our own user profiles when we play and i think that the series is at: 24-4. i have a 12 game winnin' streak! but i think these days are over, due to the return of someone who has been in nyc for the past year. oh well...these past 5 months have been fun. on sunday night, we went to eat some ramen @ meidaimae, the place where i want to live. grubbin' yo.

back to work on monday. it's valentine's day but in japan it's a little bit different. here, the girls give the guys chocolate. the guys don't have to give a thing! however, on white day, march 14th, the guys give the girls white chocolate. this day was founded by one of the major chocolate companies in japan, lotte. you're kinda obligated to give white chocolate back to the people who gave you chocolate on valentine's day. i hear that if a girl who you're really not that interested in gave you chocolate on vday, you can give her marshmallows instead of white chocolate which means that you're not interested. it's only a rumor but i'll try to do some more research to see if this is really true.

on tuesday, i had work @ my elementary school. durin' one of the passing periods, 2 6th graders came into the teachers' room and gave me this card. they read it aloud to me and i instantly got a tiny bit teary eyed. it's one of the best feelings in the world to have kids voice their appreciation and thanks to you. this is one of the reasons that keeps teachers goin'.

wednesday was a chill day which was quite unusual cuz i normally have 5 classes. i ended up only havin' 3 with each class bein' cut by 5 min. later that evenin', headed out to nishi funabashi for the principal of mita jhs. it was a pretty fun event with many games and good food. met some bball coaches that worked with oscar sakamoto (no, not my dad) over 10 years ago. i even got to meet a real sumo wrestler! i'll post some pics of this event soon.

aite then,

kaz out...
