so the weather has been really strange lately. it's been humid and the mosquitos are startin' to appear. boo...

thursday, 05.13

another day @ school. taught the 9th graders again as well as the 7th graders. for the 7th grade class, sekiguchi sensei wanted me to incorporate a one point word/phrase. so for my first word/phrase, i taught them t.g.i.f. it was kinda interestin' to see their reactions when they understood the meanin', which i did mostly in english.

played a little bit of bball durin' lunch recess in the gym. today was the day that the 7th graders get to use the gym. it was a mad house in there. kids were playin' catch with vballs, rallyin' with bandminton and shootin' around. i could only shoot for so long, cuz it was hella stuffy/humid up in there.

cleaned with the 8th graders and hung out with tanaka kun, a pretty outgoin' and talkative but not so good of a student.

ended up challengin' him in ping pong during club activities. there was this big ol crowd around us watchin'. he's not bad, but bein' the funny kid, he said that he really is good and that he was playin' with his weak hand. so he switched and so did i with the oohs, ahhs and laughs from the other students.

i then went to play vball. warmed up with the 9th graders. we then played 3 sets with me playin' hitter instead of my normal position of setter. it was kinda nice to get to hit, since i don't get to very often. i think it's good for me to get back into the swing of things and raise my confidence on a lower net. i don't get to play vball that much anymore, but since startin' up again, i remembered why it was my second favorite sport.

since i normally don't play middle blocker, i found myself always tryin' to look for the pass to get into position to set the ball. it took a while to get used to things but once i did, i was hittin' and blockin' pretty well.

inbetween sets, toita sensei makes them do drills. this one drill was pretty crazy. first time i've seen it. it goes something like this: the girls pair up, while toita sensei starts tossin' balls all over the court, and i mean ALL over the court which includes the other side of the net. until the first person can get the ball up so that the second person can hit it back to toita sensei, they must stay on the court til they do so. once they do, the next pair comes on.

when this one 8th grader started to cheat a little by movin' before the ball was tossed, toita sensei yells at her in pretty downgradin' japanese. the girl does it again, so toita sensei throws the ball at the girl's face. the girl still doesn't understand as she moves before the ball is tossed. so, toita sensei chucks the ball at her face again. i was like ddddaaaammmnnnn!!!!!, when is this girl gonna learn? it took 3 balls to the face before the girl finally realized what she was doin' wrong. man, this practice was intense. you can't really get away with that shiet back home without some kind of resistance. one of the girl's dad that comes out to help told me toita sensei is a devil w/a smile. the female coaches are just as bad or maybe worse than the male coaches...

also inbetween sets, toita sensei makes some of the girls get us ice cold drinks. kinda nice. i think i can get used to this kinda stuff.

the school and after school clubs are so structured. it's mostly based on your class level. all the 7th and 8th graders must refer to the 9th graders as "____ senpai", which means senior. durin' practice, toita sensei's skin is like an armadillo's, but afterwards, she's one of the nicest people. today, she first called the 7th graders in, asked them if they are havin' a good time and then gave them a babo-chan (the japanese vball team mascot) keychain. then she called in the 8th graders and gave them cheesecake and the 9th graders next. she then distributed to the grade level captains this aomori apple juice. the girls get so happy and excited when they get snacks after practice. they're probably the most genki (cheerful/high spirited) durin' these times.
